Spanish Cosmetics: Expanding Influence in Malaysia & Brunei | An Interview with the Embassy of Spain in Malaysia

Spanish cosmetic brands are making significant strides in the Asian market. Leveraging their European heritage associated with luxury and quality, these brands emphasize advanced technology, innovation, and natural ingredients. This approach appeals to Malaysian & Bruneian consumers who seek effective and high-quality skincare solutions, positioning Spanish cosmetics as high-tech, innovative, and premium European products.

Last October, we had the opportunity to interview Mr. Juan Guia, Chief Advisor of the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Malaysia, regarding the influence of Spanish cosmetics in Malaysia and Brunei and the support provided by the embassy to these brands.

According to Mr. Juan Guia, the Spanish Embassy, through its Economic and Commercial Office, provides essential support to Spanish brands. They offer a variety of resources such as promotional activities, trade missions, and market entry guidance. By participating in Malaysian fairs and supporting Spanish companies, the Embassy helps Skeyndor establish and expand our presence in the region. Additionally, the Embassy assists in finding local partners or distributors and navigating bureaucratic challenges.

Mr. Juan Guia highlights the importance of local partnerships in overcoming market challenges. Diverse regulatory standards, distribution channels, and intense competition require brands to build consumer trust and brand recognition. A strong local partner, such as Unique Aesthetics for Skeyndor, is essential for projecting the right image and fostering success.

Although free trade agreements (FTAs) with ASEAN countries are mostly at the European level, the lack of tariffs on many cosmetic products already benefits Spanish brands in Malaysia. The Embassy supports these efforts through ongoing negotiations for an FTA between Malaysia and the EU.

Skeyndor has benefitted from collaboration with the Spanish Trade Office, leveraging our resources for commercial missions and promotional activities.

“For the next years Malaysia cosmetics market will continue to expand and offer new opportunities for you to explore. The Embassy of Spain and the Economic and Commercial Office in KL will be present in your joint journey. We wish you both, Skeyndor and Unique Aesthetics, to develop tighter bonds and even greater success moving forward,” said Mr. Juan Guia. He emphasized that the Embassy of Spain will remain committed to supporting Skeyndor Malaysia and Unique Aesthetics on their journey.
